America – Forgotten Echos of the Past

“An American Icon”       Mark Schutter ©2010        Watercolor Pencils

The American Bison is a true original and its image takes us back to a seldom remembered past when they roamed freely over the land prior to their decimation almost to extinction at the hands of man. In this image from my goal was to capture the simple beauty, strength and majesty of this truly magnificent animal.

So much of history is lost to the echoes and which version of history depends on who is telling it. Each side has an agenda in which the truth can easily get lost. We forget that we all are from somewhere and traveling our paths around this spinning green ball hurtling through space and time.

We lift up people for one good act then tear them down for one bad one. We admire the thought and criticize the action that follows.

If we were to measure the worth of every human being on whether they never fell short, all would fall short. Only Jesus Christ walked this earth not committing a sin. We lie to others, hiding the truth even from ourselves that we would never do such a thing. For we are better than them. Are we really?

Aren’t we all just sinners, and don’t we all need saving? That is where our commonality lies, that it is only by grace that we can find healing.

Happy 4th of July America!

We can and must be better than this!

Time Never Cares

Time never cares what we do it just marches ever forward. There is no turning back when you realize what you regret. #LiveIntentionally #ChooseWisely #BeKind

“Contemplation” Photo of Dungeness Bay near Sequim, WA

Each day and each moment offers us an opportunity to make a difference. To touch a life and help even one person breath easier, even for a single moment. How often do we allow those moments of opportunity just slip away as time moves on?

In these times we find ourselves in, it has been said we should never waste a crisis. Well, now is the time to be intentional in how we treat others. Especially those closest to us, those we may find ourselves sequestered with day after day.

  1. BE KIND
  2. SPEAK LIFE
  3. LOVE FREELY
  4. FORGIVE OFTEN
  5. GIVE GRACE

Pick one thing from the list today and extend that to others and especially to yourself. Remember you matter too, and time will march on whether we act or not.

Now what will you do today?

Holding Space

Watched from afar
by loving eyes of grace.
Angels stand silently
at attention holding space.

Ragged breaths float
into the fading twilight.
Limp soft hands
and open eyes without sight.

At God’s command
quietly the angels step back.
Swords are dropped
onto heaven’s floor – clack!

Cold and alone
shivering to barely stand.
The path before
leads into undiscovered lands.

Walking slowly away
into the solid darkness ahead.
Trusting paths unknown
through whispering shadows we tread.

An eternal light
will shine into our night’s black.
If we choose to see
our future can be taken – back!

Answers lie unspoken
as new dreams emerge and begin.
Resting in stories
told of magic and truth without end.

There Will Be Days Like These!

Reworked stanza from the Edgar Allen Poe poem ‘El Dorado’ Mark Schutter ©2016

Transparency
A moment of vulnerability my friends. I try really hard to be positive in my outlook on life. But every once in a while, yes every once in a while I fall and slip down into my own darkness. Lately, I have struggled with feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty. Hence, the poem above.

Life
This life on this side of the undiscovered, is not always easy. Things are thrown at us and we are left to deal with it. And sometimes we deal, or cope, better than others. We fall and struggle to get back up. It is then that we must persevere.

Grace
We must extend grace to ourselves as we hopefully would to others when they fall. We are all in this together, right? I encourage you, as I will do, to just believe that grace wins and hope lives. Even and especially in those dark and troubled times of life.

What do you think?

The Sentinel

The Sentinel
“The Sentinel”  North Head Lighthouse Washington (Photo copyright Mark Schutter 2016)

He stands alone
Watching

Waiting
In the day and night

He is immovable
Focused
Freed
To keep his purpose

He remains unaffected
Strong
Silent
A watcher over our souls

He accepts dangers
Courageously
Cautionary
A beacon for weary hearts

He loves unconditionally
Everyone
All
Sacrificing himself for us
